What are the Early Signs of Labor?

What are the Early Signs of Labor?

Mama, are you noticing some subtle changes—your belly feeling a bit heavier, those mild, rhythmic tugs across your abdomen, maybe even a little extra pressure down low?

It’s natural to wonder, "Is this it?" Each of these shifts could be your body’s gentle way of saying that your baby is getting ready, and as you lean into these early signs, a mix of excitement and curiosity often follows.

You’re not alone in wondering about the first signals of labor. Every mama’s birth journey is unique and knowing what to expect can bring a little extra calm to this amazing journey.

In this blog, we’ll explain what early labor is, what signs to look for, how to keep yourself comfortable, and when to reach out for that extra support if you need it.

What is Early Labor?

Early labor, or the latent phase, is the initial stage of the labor process when your body begins gently preparing for birth. During this time, the cervix starts to soften, thin out, and open (dilate) to allow your baby to move closer to meeting you. This phase is an important step, helping your body move gradually toward the active stages of labor.

The duration of early labor varies for every mama. For some, it may last only a few hours, while for others, especially first-time mamas, it can extend over a day or even longer. The pace of early labor doesn’t necessarily indicate how the rest of labor will go, as each birth journey unfolds in its own way.

Because early labor often moves slowly, it gives you a chance to settle in, stay comfortable, and conserve energy. While it may feel like a time of waiting, know that your body is gently working, moving closer to the next stage.

Early labor is simply the beginning of your journey—a gradual, peaceful step toward meeting your little one.

Physical Signs of Early Labor

As early labor begins, your body will start giving you gentle signals that your baby’s arrival is on the horizon.

While every experience varies, here are some common physical signs many mamas often notice as this stage unfolds:

  • Lightening (Baby “Dropping”):

Your baby may settle lower into the pelvis, creating a noticeable shift in your belly. This can relieve pressure on your lungs, making breathing easier, but may add pressure to your pelvis.
  • Mild, Irregular Contractions:

Often described as gentle period cramps, these contractions help soften and thin the cervix. They’re usually not yet regular and can vary in strength and timing.
  • Increased Pelvic Pressure:

As your baby moves into position, you may feel more pressure in your pelvis. This can also bring a sensation of fullness or lower back discomfort as your body prepares.
  • Change in Discharge:

You might notice a small amount of pink-tinged mucus, known as the “bloody show,” which signals that the cervix is beginning to open slowly.

What to Do During Early Labor

In early labor, being prepared can make all the difference.

Below, we have outlined and explained some helpful steps to ease through this stage:

  • Rest and Conserve Energy

Early labor can take some time, especially for first-time mamas. Try to rest and relax as much as possible. Short naps, cozying up with a book, or practicing deep breathing can help keep your energy up for when labor progresses.

  •  Stay Hydrated and Nourished

Small, light snacks and sips of water can keep you feeling energized. Avoid heavy meals and focus on easy-to-digest options to support your body as it prepares for labor.

  •  Try Gentle Movement

Walking, stretching, or sitting on a birthing ball can help your baby settle into position. Find comfortable positions and listen to your body—it’ll guide you to what feels right.

  •  Create a Relaxing Environment

Dim lighting, soothing music, or even a warm shower can work wonders. The goal is to stay comfortable and calm, setting a peaceful tone for what’s to come.

  •  Lean on Your Support Team

Now is a great time to touch base with your support system. Consider reaching out to your doula or partner, who can help you stay grounded and provide comfort as needed.
